Strategic Planning

Example strategic planning projects include:

District of Squamish, Marine Action Strategy (2018)

With a growing population, expanding waterfront development and ever increasing storm and coastal climate impacts, Sandra Bicego of PacificaBlue Consulting provided stakeholder engagement and strategic planning services for the District of Squamish to develop a Marine Action Strategy (MASt) – a strategy to align marine objectives and to maximize broader opportunities, such as supporting coastal marine-based natural capital protection and stewardship, marine-dependent industries, waterfront revitalization, recreation, tourism, and other social-economic and development benefits. The plan will inform planning and decision making in Squamish’s intertidal and marine realm.

MASt includes strategic directions in four key focus areas including governance and shared leadership; marine industrial and local business economy; stewardship and coastal ecosystem protection; and recreation/tourism gateway. A robust engagement process involved Informant Interviews, Stakeholder Focus Sessions, a public Marine Forum and online survey, liaison with other governments, and Council updates. MASt was approved by Council in June 2018.

The process involved several key Focus Sessions with Stakeholders, a public Marine Forum and online survey, informant interviews and liaison with governments including the Squamish Nation and Council updates. MASt includes strategic directions in four key focus areas including governance and shared leadership; marine industrial and local business economy; stewardship and coastal ecosystem protection; and recreation/tourism gateway. The aim of MASt is to mobilize shared leadership within the local marine environment and align municipal policies and decisions within these four marine focus areas.
